Minimum 8 seats and maximum 16 seats (in addition to the driver). Candidates who passed their car test before January 1997 may already hold a D1 restricted licence for social and pleasure use. However, anyone driving a vehicle with more than 7 seats for hire or reward will need to pass their D1 driving test to have the full PCV entitlement.
To obtain a PCV licence (Category D1) candidates must be at least 21 years old and already hold a full car (Category B) licence.
The process of obtaining your PCV licence is as follows:
Step 1
Have a Drivers medical to prove you are physically fit to drive a Large Goods Vehicle, you will need to use a D4 form obtainable from our centre or online http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/forms/d4.pdf.
Step 2
Obtain your Provisional licence. Having completed forms D2 & D4 send with your licence to the DVLA in the enclosed envelope, we recommend you send it recorded/registered delivery. Your licence with provisional entitlement will normally be returned within 2 to 4 weeks.
Step 3
Pass the theory test. This is carried out at local test centres and made up of Three test; Test 1 is 100 multiple choice questions and Test 2 is a 19 clip hazard perception, Test 3 consists of a case study.

Course Duration
The training consists of a 3-day one to one tuition or a 5-day shared course with another student. The course will commence each morning at 8.30am with a test on the 3rd or 5th day.
Test Criteria
- Answer approximately 5 questions on basic vehicle checks
- Reverse into a marked bay
- Controlled brake test
- Drive for approximately 1 hour. Test may also include hill starts and
motorway driving.
- 30 Minutes of additional indepth tell me show me questions.
